PAS Rudiment #1 Single Stroke Roll: “Singles” was one of my favorite skill sets to practice in high school. They’re fun to play, and they look impressive to non-drummers and drummers alike. Furthermore, it’s a technique that applies to all the percussion instruments: marching percussion, mallets, timpani, suspended cymbal, the list goes on and on.
In this lesson, we cover 2 exercises, one from Cavaliers ’96 and one from Broken City ’17.
This lesson shows you how to gradually build up your singles, making sure they’re even and flowing. These are the foundational concepts you’ll need in order to build speed and chops!

Huei-Yuan Pan is a Los Angeles based musician via Chicago, originally from Houston. His drum corps experience includes performing with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (Snare, 2001) and The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps (Snare, 2002-2003; Front Ensemble, 2004). From 2008-2011, Huei served as Director and Arranger for Green Thunder Percussion, and in 2012-2013, Percussion Caption Head with Regiment.
