I remember how strange it was when I first realized my teachers practiced to get better. It seems obvious now, but because they were the model of what I was striving to emulate, my young student mind thought they had already reached the summit. I’m fortunate enough to say that throughout my career, I have seen many of my teachers model the habits of working to become better teachers, artists, and people. I now understand Growth as a continuous process beyond formal schooling. School can provide you with the tools you’ll need to build your own projects and create your own independent learning opportunities outside the walls of the traditional classroom. Your work in that educational bubble is only the beginning of a path to lifelong learning. I’ll often shed my new ideas or practice approaches between lessons. If I’m working on something, I like to share it with my students in a way that makes sense in the context of what they’re doing. I’m hoping it shows them there’s always more to learn and gets their ambition/creative wheels turning. Here’s a snippet of a buzz roll routine I’ve been experimenting with: isolates the hands in a Gallop format and works on the control for playing 3 equal and distinct notes. I also tried it at slower tempos with 4 and 5 note groupings, focusing on sound, posture and arm mechanics. 🤓 Leave a comment down below if you have a go-to exercises for silky, smooth buzz rolls!

Q: “Hey Huei, I’m trying to make my drumline, how do I develop my chops in my forearms?” — A: Not all chops are created equal. There are different kinds of chops rooted in each fundamental skill and technique. For example, just because you can play 8’s really fast doesn’t mean you’ll have great separation of heights (dynamic and visual contrast). To me, “chops” doesn’t mean just being able to play fast; it means having full technical mastery that doesn’t inhibit your ability to express the music. There’s a broad palette of character and emotion that can be realized with a few pieces of wood, which in turn require a broad palette of technique. When you can’t play a passage of music, figure out what you’re missing from your technique that you need to target during your self-practice time. Furthermore, it’s up to us to systematically develop our technique and musicianship in parallel - keep your sound, ability to listen adjust and attention to playing with expression at the forefront of your efforts!

I’m only teaching one day a week now, but it’s been so important for me to stay connected as a teacher, musician, and practitioner. I love seeing students develop over time, my education lens is used in all my creative & professional work, and music taught me to continually refine and grow. - That being said, after a long reaching day, it’s good to get your head out of the trenches and into the clouds every once in awhile. One of my favorite parts about watching her grow up has been seeing her sense humor blossom day by day. I remember a time before she could speak, and I would think, “I can’t wait to see what’s she like when she grows up.” Turns out she’s quick to laugh, slightly (overtly) mischievous, and knows how to melt Dad in about 0.5 seconds after she’s intentionally pulled her sock off to flick sand all over him. 😂 #parenthood #dadlife #daughter #shennanigans
